Extra-Provincial Online Business Registrations in Alberta
Extra-provincial registration in Alberta is required before a corporation formed anywhere else carries on business here, and it takes one package filed through a registry agent. This page explains what carrying on business means, the two filing routes, and the price for each entity type.
Carrying On Business in Alberta Made Simple With ACS
A corporation formed outside Alberta must register here if it carries on business in the province. That includes soliciting business in Alberta or having a resident agent, representative, warehouse, office or place of business here. ACS is a private company: our CORES-trained agents prepare your filing and submit it through a licensed Alberta registry agent, and we are not a government office or a registry agent.
There are two routes. Corporations from British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba use the NWPTA online route: no government fee, your home registry number pre-populates the home-jurisdiction information, and changes filed at home flow to Alberta automatically. Everyone else files the standard package: Statement of Registration (REG3055), Notice of Agent for Service (REG3037), a certified copy of the charter documents, proof of current status from the home registry, an Alberta NUANS report less than 91 days old (not needed for a federal corporation) and valid ID.
Every registrant appoints an agent for service who is an individual located in Alberta; we can act for you. A trained person checks the package, complete orders received before 3:00 pm MT are filed the same business day, and filed documents come back in PDF for your minute book. Registered corporations also file Alberta annual returns. This hub is part of our online business registration in Alberta catalogue.

Not sure which one?
- If your corporation's home jurisdiction is British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, use the NWPTA route; there is no government fee.
- If it is federal, register with the standard package and skip the NUANS report.
- If it is from Ontario, Quebec, the Atlantic provinces or the territories, register with the standard package and an Alberta NUANS report.
- If it is a partnership, pick the LP or LLP registration that matches its home form.
- If it is a non-profit or charity, start with the non-profit page; charity status stays with the CRA.
- If the company or its owners are outside Canada, start with the non-resident page; Alberta has had no residency requirement for directors since March 29, 2021.
- If you are an accountant or lawyer filing for several clients, call (403) XXX-XXXX about partner pricing and one account for all of them.
FAQs
Does a federal corporation have to register in Alberta?
Yes. A federal (CBCA) corporation must register extra-provincially in Alberta before it carries on business here. It files the standard Statement of Registration package with an Alberta agent for service, but Alberta exempts federal corporations from the NUANS report requirement for that registration.
What is the NWPTA route and who can use it?
Corporations whose home jurisdiction is British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba register in Alberta through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration under the New West Partnership, with no government fee. Your home registry number pre-populates the home-jurisdiction details, and changes filed at home, including annual returns, flow to Alberta automatically. It covers business corporations with share capital, co-operatives with share capital, LPs and LLPs.
Do I need an Alberta agent for service?
Yes. Every extra-provincial corporation appoints an agent for service who is an individual located in Alberta with an Alberta address; the agent does not need to be a lawyer. If you have nobody in the province, ACS can act as your agent for service.
What happens if I do business in Alberta without registering?
Alberta's Business Corporations Act requires an out-of-province corporation to register before it carries on business here, so operating without registration leaves the corporation non-compliant. The fix is to register now; we prepare the package the same business day.
