Sole Proprietorships and Partnerships – Updates and Cancellations
To update a trade name registration in Alberta, or a partnership, LP or LLP, you file a change through a registry agent; there is no annual renewal, so a filing is the only way the public record changes. Pick the update below, see the total price before the form, and complete orders received before 3:00 pm MT are filed the same business day.
Business Name Updates Made Simple With ACS
ACS is a private company. Our CORES-trained agents prepare your filing and submit it through a licensed Alberta registry agent. We are not a government office or a registry agent. Business names in Alberta are registered under the Partnership Act: a trade name for a sole proprietorship, or for a corporation trading under a name other than its legal name, a general partnership, a limited partnership (LP) or a limited liability partnership (LLP). The registration records who is behind the name; it is not a separate legal entity and it does not protect the name.
Alberta trade names and partnerships have no periodic renewal. The flip side is that nothing updates itself: a new address, a new partner or a closed business stays wrong on the record until a change is filed. You give us the new details and valid ID, a trained person reviews the filing, and it goes to Corporate Registry through a licensed Alberta registry agent, with a PDF of the filed document back to you.

FAQs
Do I have to update my trade name registration if I move?
Yes. The registration records your name and address, so file a business information update when either changes. Alberta trade names never come up for renewal, which means a change filing is the only way the public record gets corrected; complete orders received before 3:00 pm MT are filed the same business day.
How do I remove a partner from an Alberta partnership?
File a change of partners through a registry agent so the registration shows who is now behind the business. How the departing partner is paid out and released is a matter for your partnership agreement and your lawyer or CPA, not the registry. We prepare the filing from the remaining partners' details and valid ID and file it the same business day.
Should I cancel my trade name when I incorporate?
Usually, yes. A sole proprietorship registration records you personally as the owner, so once the business moves into the corporation, cancel it and, if the corporation will keep trading under that name, register the name as the corporation's trade name. Whether and when to make the switch is a question for your CPA; we file the cancellation and the new trade name together.
