Extra-Provincials – Keep Your Alberta Registration Current

Extra-provincial corporation filings in Alberta keep an out-of-province corporation's registration matching its home record: an annual return, a name change, a new head office or a new agent for service. Each filing below has an upfront price, and complete orders received before 3:00 pm MT are filed the same business day.

Extra-Provincial Corporation Filings in Alberta Made Simple With ACS

ACS is a private company. Our CORES-trained agents prepare your filing and submit it through a licensed Alberta registry agent. We are not a government office or a registry agent. A corporation formed outside Alberta must register here if it carries on business in the province, which includes soliciting business in Alberta or having a resident agent, representative, warehouse, office or place of business here. Once registered, it keeps that registration current with the four filings on this page. Not registered yet? Start with extra-provincial registration instead.

Every registered corporation names an agent for service: an individual located in Alberta, with an Alberta address, who accepts legal documents on the corporation's behalf and who does not need to be a lawyer. We can be that person through our agent for service product, and we file the change notice whenever the agent changes.

NWPTA corporations: changes that flow automatically

If your home jurisdiction is British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, your corporation registers in Alberta through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration under the New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA). Changes you file at home, including annual returns, flow to the other NWPTA provinces automatically, and alberta.ca states there is no cost to register or update through that route.

That usually means an NWPTA corporation does not file the annual return, name change or address change above in Alberta separately; file at home and the Alberta record follows. How NWPTA corporations handle the NUANS report and the agent for service is. Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic and federal corporations have no such link and file each change in Alberta.

Not sure which one?

  • If a year has passed since you registered and you are not an NWPTA corporation, file the extra-provincial annual return.
  • If the home registry shows a new name, file the extra-provincial name change.
  • If the head office moved, or an Alberta office opened or closed, file the change of head office.
  • If the person accepting legal documents in Alberta changed, moved away or resigned, file the agent for service change.
  • If your home is BC, Saskatchewan or Manitoba, file the change at home first, then call us if anything in Alberta still looks wrong.
  • If the corporation has never been registered here, start with extra-provincial registration.

FAQs

Does my BC or Ontario corporation file an annual return in Alberta?

An extra-provincial corporation registered in Alberta files an Alberta annual return each year. A BC corporation registered through the NWPTA route is different: the annual return it files in BC flows to Alberta automatically. An Ontario corporation has no such link, so it files its Alberta return through a registry agent, and we do that for you.

My corporation changed its name at home — what do I file in Alberta?

An extra-provincial name change, so the Alberta registration shows the same name as your home registry. Expect to supply the home registry's document showing the new name and an Alberta NUANS report for it. BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba corporations skip this step because the change filed at home flows to Alberta.

Can ACS be the agent for service for an extra-provincial corporation?

Yes. Alberta requires an agent for service who is an individual located in Alberta with an Alberta address, and that person does not need to be a lawyer. Our Calgary-based agent for service product meets the requirement, and we file the Notice of Agent for Service with your registration or as a change later.
