How to update a corporation name on an Alberta registration
The name change itself happens at home: the corporation amends its articles in Ontario, federally or wherever it was formed. Alberta's record does not update by itself (except for New West Partnership corporations, below), so the registration is amended to show the new name.
Two things make the Alberta filing work:
- Proof of the home change: a certified copy of the home registry's certificate of amendment or name change.
- An Alberta NUANS report for the new name, less than 91 days old. A NUANS report is a name search that reserves the name for 90 days. Federal corporations are exempt from NUANS when they register in Alberta.
If the new name is already in use by an Alberta corporation, the NUANS report will show it. An extra-provincial corporation may then need to carry on business in Alberta under an assumed name. We tell you before anything is filed.
New West Partnership corporations
A corporation whose home is British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba is registered in Alberta through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration. Changes filed at home, including a name change, flow to Alberta automatically at no cost. You do not need this service unless your Alberta record has not updated; in that case, call us and we will check it.
Who this is for
- The Ontario, Quebec, Atlantic, territorial or foreign corporation that rebranded at home and now needs Alberta to match.
- The federal corporation whose Corporations Canada amendment is done and whose Alberta registration still shows the old name.
- The law clerk or paralegal who handled the home amendment and wants the Alberta side filed with the same precision and partner pricing.
How it works
- Upload the home certificate of amendment and tell us the new name. We confirm the Alberta registration with our free corporate lookup.
- We order the Alberta NUANS report (where required) and review it for conflicts.
- We prepare the Alberta amendment and a CORES-trained agent checks it against the record.
- We submit it through a licensed Alberta registry agent into CORES, Alberta's Corporate Registry System. ACS is a private company; we are not a government office or a registry agent.
- You receive the filed document by email the same business day for complete orders received before 3:00 pm MT.
If the amendment cannot be filed, our refund policy explains what happens.
Common mistakes we catch before filing
- An uncertified copy of the home certificate, or a copy showing only the new name without the old one.
- A NUANS report ordered under a slightly different name than the one on the home certificate. The two must match exactly, including the legal element.
- The Alberta filing left for the annual return. The return confirms the record; a name change is its own filing.
- Agent for service and addresses left stale at the same time. We ask, and file those changes alongside if needed.

FAQs
Do I need an Alberta NUANS report for the new name?
Usually yes. An Alberta NUANS report (a name search that reserves the name for 90 days) less than 91 days old is required for the new name, unless the corporation is federal (CBCA), which alberta.ca exempts from the NUANS requirement on registration. We order the report and read it before filing.
Is the change automatic for BC, SK and MB corporations?
Yes. Corporations from British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are registered in Alberta through the New West Partnership route, and changes filed in the home registry flow to Alberta automatically at no cost. Check your Alberta record a few days after the home filing; if the old name is still showing, we can look into it.
What proof of the home-jurisdiction change is needed?
A certified copy of the home registry's certificate of amendment or name change, showing the old name, the new name and the effective date, along with the Alberta NUANS report where required. Scans are fine for our review; we tell you if the registry needs more.
