New West Partnership extra-provincial registration: how it differs from the standard route
A corporation formed outside Alberta must register in Alberta if it carries on business here, including soliciting business in Alberta or having a resident agent, representative, warehouse, office or place of business in Alberta. For most out-of-province corporations that means the standard package: a Statement of Registration, a Notice of Agent for Service, certified charter documents, proof of current status and an Alberta NUANS report.
The New West Partnership Trade Agreement (NWPTA) replaces that package for corporations from BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Registration goes through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration (newwestregistration.alberta.ca). Your home registry number pre-populates the home-jurisdiction information, alberta.ca states there is no cost to register or update through the route, and changes filed at home, including annual returns, flow to the other partnership provinces automatically.
What our source material does not confirm is how the route treats the Alberta NUANS report and the agent for service. We confirm both at filing and tell you before anything is ordered.
Who this is for
- BC, Saskatchewan and Manitoba corporations taking on Alberta work, opening an Alberta location or placing a representative here, who want the registration done right the first time.
- Owners who have heard the route is free and want to know what still needs to be correct: the home registry number, the entity type and the Alberta details.
- Accounting and law firms registering clients across the four western provinces, who want one contact for the Alberta side and confirmation for the file.
- Corporations already registered in Alberta the old way who want to know whether their record now updates automatically.
How it works
- Order online (about 10 minutes). Enter your home jurisdiction, home registry number, legal name and the Alberta details. The price is shown before you pay.
- We confirm eligibility. The corporation must have share capital and be in good standing at home; we check the home registry record before we start.
- We prepare the Alberta registration through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration, using your home registry number so the home-jurisdiction data pre-populates and matches.
- We confirm the Alberta record by running an Alberta corporate search once the registration is active, and email you the result with the registration details.
- We watch the record. After each home-jurisdiction change you tell us about, we check that Alberta reflects it, and we remind you before your home annual return so the flow-through keeps working.
Common mistakes we catch before filing
- Using the NWPTA route for a corporation without share capital, such as a society or non-profit, which must use the standard registration.
- A home registry number that belongs to a different entity, a dissolved predecessor or a trade name rather than the corporation.
- A home corporation that is not in good standing, so the registration cannot complete until the home filing is fixed.
- Assuming an Ontario or federal corporation can use the route. Ontario is not a partnership province, and federal corporations use the federal extra-provincial registration.
- Registering and then forgetting the Alberta record exists, so a later home change that fails to flow through goes unnoticed.

FAQs
Which corporations can use the NWPTA route?
Corporations whose home jurisdiction is British Columbia, Saskatchewan or Manitoba. The New West Partnership covers business corporations with share capital, cooperatives with share capital, limited partnerships and limited liability partnerships. It does not cover corporations without share capital, such as non-profits, which use the standard extra-provincial registration instead.
Is there a government fee for NWPTA registration in Alberta?
No. Alberta.ca states there is no cost to register or update a BC, Saskatchewan or Manitoba corporation through Alberta's Online Extra-provincial Registration. Our price covers preparing the registration correctly, confirming the Alberta record and watching it afterward.
Do I still need an Alberta agent for service?
On the standard extra-provincial route every registered corporation names an agent for service who is an individual located in Alberta. How the NWPTA online route treats the agent for service is not confirmed in our source material, so we confirm it at the time of filing and provide an Alberta agent where one is required.
Do my home-province filings update Alberta automatically?
Yes. Once registered through the New West Partnership route, changes filed with your home registry, including annual returns, flow to the other partnership provinces automatically. You keep filing at home; we check that the Alberta record reflects each change.
